  10. %    The beacon file (bea_w3ep.dat), is maintained by Emil Pocock, W3EP.
  11. %    Emil writes the `World above 50MHz' column in QST. Please send
  12. %    beacon updates to Emil and we will get them from him.
  13. %    Sorry, this file only has US beacons.

  15. %    This is a modified W3EP format file in which text (eg "omni")
  16. %    have been replaced by numerical data in an attempt to have an
  17. %     easy to parse, machine readable, format. I don't care what format
  18. %    is used as long as it is stable for the useful life of this program.

  21. %    beacon: is for a regular beacon
  22. %    BEACON: is for a beacon that you want to be
  23. %    specially marked (like your club's) beacon.
  24. %    The routines to make a beacon "special" are in az_proj.ps.
  25. %    If you make up a "special" routine that you like
  26. %    better than ours, send it along. We might like it better too.
  27. %
  28. %    CAVEAT: Some of the beacons are directional. Unless the
  29. %    beacon is relatively close (say 500-100km depending on
  30. %    the accuracy you're interested in), then the path of the
  31. %    radio wave (which is following a great circle) will be
  32. %    curved on the map (like the lines of constant longitude).
  33. %    Only the great circle lines to and from the QTH are straight
  34. %    on this projection. So if the beacon is pointing at you on
  35. %    the azimuthal projection map it will be pointing at you in
  36. %    physical reality too. However if the map says it is pointing
  37. %    somewhere else, you may not even be able to guess the path
  38. %     of the radio wave on the map surface. For that you should do
  39. %    a projection from the beacon's site.
